Securing Healthcare Data

In the beginning, I didn’t understand the “hub bub” surrounding securing healthcare data. My thoughts were, who cares that the public knows I’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure, for example, and the medications my doctor prescribed me. I didn’t understand how that could be of ill affect to me. My eyes weren’t open to the risk until I researched the subject. It got me thinking, I wonder who else out there doesn’t understand the risk?

Research Revealed

Research revealed that not only are there individuals that can access our personal healthcare data but also numerous organizations! It also revealed selling healthcare data is big business! I didn’t realize that selling this data is considered a high margin business. It’s a way for managers to add to their bottom line in a big way! Where does this data come from and how is it used, you ask? Well, here’s a short list of where the data comes from and how it’s used:

  • Pharmacies
  • Drug Wholesalers
  • Medical Providers
  • Insurers & Insurance Claims
  • Diagnostic Labs
  • Public Data on the Internet

Here are just a few examples of how this data can be used. Trust, the list is pretty much endless.

  • Pharma companies can use this data to grease doctors into prescribing certain drugs, targeting certain groups with specific profiles for their drugs.
  • Advertising Outfits can sell data to social media platforms
  • And the scariest of them all is Blackmailers can use data to exploit people.

Fears

Before researching, I hadn’t considered that our medical records could be obtained illegally!!! There’s a lot at stake here. There are many things that could go wrong. Imagine a database being hacked or exposed somehow. Hackers could use this data to make fraudulent medical claims, leaving the identity victim with many bogus bills. You may be familiar with the old saying, if “IF” was a fifth, I’d be drunk! However, I don’t know about you but I don’t want to take that risk. Your healthcare data contains financial information, therefore, presenting a financial risk as well. Discovering this information and more caused an urgency within me to find a solution to this grave dilemma!

The Solution

Now, you’re probably asking, “How can I protect myself?” I have the solution with an added bonus! There is a way for you to protect your healthcare data and earn money simultaneously! It’s a win, win! Why be vulnerable, allowing others to profit off of something that belongs to you and without your permission? My sentiment is if anyone should make money off my information, by golly, it should be me! Take a look at this quick overview:
